In 1870, San Luis Obispo Chinatown was the largest Chinese Settlement in California.
The California gold rush and the building of the Pacific Railroad brought thousands of immigrants in search of a better life for themselves and their families.
When one talks about San Luis Obispo Chinatown , one must mention a man named On Wong known as "Ah Louis." His contributions to San Luis Obispo were enormous. In 1874 Ah Louis opened his grocery store. Not only did he sell Chinese groceries and goods, he also had a bank, a post office and a Chinese Pharmacy. He also owned a brickyard, and was a labor contractor for local businesses. Ah Louis Store still stands today and is registered as an historical landmark.
