For Day 17 of Side by Side, I drew the King of Pentacles. On the card on the left, Leland Stanford relaxes in a handsomely carved throne beneath a lush grape arbor, surrounded by talismans of his empire. A bull’s head tops his cane. On the card on the right, grapevines adorn the king’s velvet robes, and bulls’ heads decorate his throne. The castle behind him is the seat of his power. Both men appear to enjoy luxury.
