A connection, partnership, commitment, trust, compassion, affinity, love, unity. Cooperation. Harmony. A new romance.
Helen Hunt Jackson was an activist on behalf of Native American rights, and she wrote several scholarly books revealing the US broken treaties. Her work was mostly ignored until she wrote RAMONA, the romantic novel of Ramona and Alejandro, a Romeo and Juliet of Early California. Part Uncle Tom’s Cabin, it opened readers toa different culture and a world outside of their comfort zone. Nearly every summer since 1923, amid the cactus and chaparral near Hemet, the saga of Ramona, half-Indian and half-Scottish, and her full-blooded Indian lover, Alessandro, has been staged for audiences that now exceed 2 million.
