Harry Roff is believed to be the first rider to leave Sacramento with the eastbound mail on April 3, 1860. The first Pony Express rider left San Francisco from Kearney and Clay/Washington. Riders carried 15 lbs of mail, and stations were 25 miles apart. Riders were expected to travel 3 stations at roughly 8 miles per hour. Time from NY to SF averaged 11-13 days. Progress didn't stop though, and the telegraph eventually supplanted the Pony Express.
