Meet the King of Swords

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

The King of Swords is stern, incorruptible and just. A powerful crusader, who transforms information into action.

In 1856, Jeremiah Burke Sanderson established Sacramento's first school for children of color. In 1859, he took charge of San Francisco's first black public school. He wrote the proceedings of the 1855 state black convention, helped found the state's Franchise League and signed a call to assure blacks equal rights under the Fifteenth Amendment. He was hit and killed by a train while walking home from a prayer meeting. His daughter, Mary, became the first black female teacher in Oakland.
