James C. Beckwourth was a trapper and part of Frémont’s party. His name is preserved in Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, between present-day Reno, Nevada, and Portola, California, and the Beckwourth Trail is part of the Emigrant Trails system. Western Pacific Railroad uses the pass, and it was a key route for settlers during the Gold Rush years. Beckwourth was a blacksmith, frontiersman, trapper, fur trader, explorer, wrangler, soldier, courier, wagon master, gambler, rancher, hotel keeper, trader, store keeper, rancher, author, and scout.
