Updated: Sep 15, 2020

James C. Beckwourth was a trapper and part of Frémont’s party. His name is preserved in Beckwourth Pass through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, between present-day Reno, Nevada, and Portola, California, and the Beckwourth Trail is part of the Emigrant Trails system. Western Pacific Railroad uses the pass, and it was a key route for settlers during the Gold Rush years. Beckwourth was a blacksmith, frontiersman, trapper, fur trader, explorer, wrangler, soldier, courier, wagon master, gambler, rancher, hotel keeper, trader, store keeper, rancher, author, and scout. He was known for being one of the few African American mountain men. California Tarot - Shadows and Light
