For Day 25 of Side by Side, I drew Death. On the right, an armor-wearing skeleton rides a white horse and carries a black flag with a white rose. Mortals fall in his wake; even children and popes are not immune. In the distant background the sun rises between two towers. On the left, a skeleton wears the armor of a Spanish Conquistador, representing the first of several waves of colonists who entered California. The men, women, and children at his feet include the indigenous people who succumbed to disease, starvation, betrayal, and murder by those colonists and their descendants. In the distance, the sun rises between two Mission bell towers.
