For Day 34 of Side by Side, I drew the King of Cups. To represent the master of the emotional realm, we chose Thomas Starr King, a vibrant orator and advocate for civil rights, labor, and social justice, who also was credited with keeping California in the Union. On the left, King stands in Yosemite Valley, on the banks of the Merced River, near the outcropping known as Three Brothers. He holds his cup of office in one hand, and a Unitarian bible in the other.
