Mary Ellen Pleasant was a woman of color and a successful entrepreneur, abolitionist and civil rights activist. She was also rumored to be a voodoo queen. Were the rumors true, or simply the diminishment of a racist society?
She helped former slaves to find homes and jobs, and she fought – and won – against a society that was biased against women and people of color. She mocked those who called her a voodoo queen by often carrying a crystal ball around town!
